The banilejo mango variety is exported under protected designation of origin and represents the country in worldwide markets.
The Dominican Republic is one of the principal mango exporters of the Caribbean region. 7,000 tons of mango were exported in 2011. Organized plantations and hybrid cultivation have considerably increased in recent years along with subsequent growth in exportation volume.
The Mango Cluster has determined that approximately 4,000 hectares of land are currently used for mango cultivation. Last year, some 400 containers of mango were shipped to Europe, where the mango is one of the most marketable fruits in countries such as the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Spain.
