19 different varieties of avocado are grown on our soil. Their cultivation allows for harvesting in seasons other than fall-winter, resulting in year-round market fulfillment.
The Dominican Republic is listed among the four principal producers and exporters of avocado in the world. Over 640 million units were harvested in 2012 and 10,000 tons of avocado were exported at a value of US$11.6 million.
There is great demand for our country’s avocados, particularly among ethnic groups residing in communities throughout the USA and the Europeans Union. To meet this requirement, over 8,000 Dominican producers grow an ample selection of avocado types that offer the advantage of year-long harvest, depending on the variety.
The Semil-34 of this crop is impacting the international market because the fruit is larger in size and yield, which makes it attractive among customers.
